How we choose
For generic basket items, the comparison is intentionally brand-neutral. We search both retailer APIs, require the requested pack size where available, reject obvious specialty variants that were not requested, then select the lowest-priced product that still qualifies as a strong match.
The matching system also supports product-specific required and forbidden terms. For example, a beef sausage comparison can require both beef and sausage while rejecting pet food, and butter can reject peanut butter and other unrelated products.
When retailer wording differs, Tumut.org can retry with alternate search phrases, recognise equivalent units such as 1kg and 1000g, accept a small tolerance for basket sizes explicitly marked Approx., and use exact multi-pack equivalents such as two 500g packs for a 1kg basket item. The displayed basket price is adjusted to the requested quantity.
If a result still does not pass validation, it is deliberately shown as unavailable and does not contribute to either supermarket total. Accuracy beats a full-looking basket.

Quick answers
For generic basket items, Tumut.org searches each supermarket API using the basket wording plus fallback search phrases when needed. It validates required product words, rejects wrong categories and forbidden terms, recognises equivalent units, allows a small size tolerance only for items labelled approximate, and can combine exact smaller packs when they add up to the requested basket quantity.
Prices come from the configured Coles and Woolworths product APIs and can change. Use the exact-product link to confirm the current retailer price and availability before shopping.
Only fresh API-verified product pairs are included in the basket totals. Stale, low-confidence or unmatched products are excluded.
The goal of this basket is to find the cheapest reasonable equivalent at each supermarket, not force the same brand where the basket item is generic.
