Tumut’s flour-milling history developed through several enterprises rather than one continuously operating mill. A retrospective local history dates a flour mill on Gilmore Creek to 1846, followed by Fred Body’s Mill Angle mill in 1853. Contemporary evidence confirms active water milling around Tumut and Gilmore during the late 1850s, although the identities and ownership of the earliest mills remain unresolved. Later millers included James Simmers and James Moon, while local tradition associates Ah Chee and Allsop & Co with the Mill Angle works. After the railway reached Tumut in 1903, G. F. Grill acquired the older milling interest and established a rail-served mill near the railway yard. The former roadside mill remained a local landmark until its reported demolition in 1964.
