The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme began as a national project in 1949 and was physically completed in 1974. Its Tumut development included Tumut 1 Power Station, completed in 1959; Tumut 2 in 1962; Blowering Power Station in 1969; and Tumut 3 in 1973. Snowy Hydro records that more than 100,000 people from over 30 countries worked on the wider Scheme, bringing engineering workers and postwar migrants into the region and changing its social composition. Blowering Dam, a 112.2-metre rockfill structure completed in 1968, became a major water-regulation, power and recreation landmark downstream of the mountain works. Forestry and wood processing subsequently became another pillar of Tumut’s economy. A NSW forestry report described the Visy kraft pulp and paper mill as technologically advanced, while ABS figures show Tumut’s urban population rising from 5,925 in 2006 to 6,518 in 2021. The 2019–20 Dunns Road fire exposed the modern town’s dependence on its plantation economy: official analysis found that nearly 60 per cent of the harvestable area in the Tumut forestry sub-region experienced moderate-to-high-severity fire.
