Between 1949 and 2021, the Snowy Mountains Scheme, Blowering Dam and plantation-based manufacturing changed Tumut from a rural service town into a major centre of hydro-electricity, forestry and heavy industry. The transformation brought construction work, engineering expertise, new roads and communities, but also left the district increasingly exposed to changes in water management, timber supply and bushfire risk.
Completed in 1903 as the Gundagai–Tumut railway reached the town, Tumut Railway Station gave the valley a direct connection to the NSW rail network. Its surviving timber station building, station master’s residence, lamp room and goods shed recall the period when rail reshaped travel, trade and public services across the district.
From the Rising Moon Hotel’s purpose-built saloon in 1856 to O’Brien’s Tumut Hall and the 1959 Millet Cutters’ Ball at Tumut Plains Hall, dances did much more than entertain. They promoted businesses, welcomed soldiers, raised money for commemorative medals and transformed rural work into public celebration. The surviving record also has limits: it privileges officials, proprietors and prominent European families, while saying little about much of the labour behind the events or the participation of Aboriginal people from the Tumut–Brungle district.
Gold rushes at Adelong, Kiandra and elsewhere in the wider district helped turn Tumut from a slowly developing agricultural settlement into a busy regional service centre. From the late 1850s, miners, carriers and travellers created stronger markets for local produce, accommodation, transport, trade and communications. By the 1880s, Tumut supported an extensive hotel trade, shops, a newspaper and substantial government services, although agriculture and pastoral activity remained the foundations of the town’s economy.
